The Daniel Crew (Baton Rouge Portrait Photographer)

I love the Daniel family.

They’ve been so good to me over the years… always talking me up… always positive… always working around my crazy schedule. They’re also probably the last session I’ll have shot in Murfreesboro, barring a few holiday sessions that might crop up while home visiting my Dad in the future.

When they heard I was leaving Murfreesboro and heading to Baton Rouge, they dropped me a note asking to schedule session. The only time I had left was the night before leaving, but they were cool and easy going and agreed to shoot. I’m so glad we did!

We met in Murfreesboro and headed to an area south of Franklin full of old fields, barns, and “Americana”. After a few hours, what did we have? Some fantastic shots of a beautiful family that I hope to continue shooting into the future, no matter how we need to make it happen. The boys are always a blast, and Mom and Dad are up for anything I plan. I love them, for sure…

Thanks Daniel Family… enjoy!

Cheers!!! Shelby

Emily's Senior Session (Baton Rouge Senior Photographer)

With the move to Baton Rouge coming up, I’ve not marketed my personal portrait business this spring… but I can always count on the great kids at Riverdale to spread the word about my work. Emily was one such client.

She and I, I’d bet, share a lot in common. She loves to read… she’s artistically minded… serious and light-heartedly happy at the same time. When I asked her about going to college this next year, the words “Ivy” and “League” were in the discussion. Right on, girl…

Nevertheless, I met her and her mom on the square and we went from there. Waling and shooting… walking and shooting… driving elsewhere and shooting… shooting some more. By the end of the session we’d captured some really nice images of a compelling young lady on her way to (what I see as) a big and bright future.

Cheers Emily!

Personal Stuff - My Lovely Family (Baton Rouge Family Photographer)

It’s not often that I put my own family in the spotlight. I thought, however, it might be nice to give everyone a glimpse into who they are and what they are about. I’ve got three (yes 3!) kids and a lovely wife who all go to great lengths to withstand my artistic “sensibilities”.

We recently took a trip to Natchez Trace State Park. It’s a great park that’s about 30 minutes from Jackson, Tn… where my in-laws reside. Well… I don’t consider them in-laws because they love me and my family so much. They truly are a second set of parents. We all spent a few days swimming, riding, hiking, camp-firing, and whatever else you can think of to do during the summer at a state park.

I spent a lot of late, late nights by the water’s edge… photographing… and contemplating the nature of life’s twists and turns. There is something magical about being out in nature in the middle of the night. It really puts into perspective how small and fragile we all are… and how our place in this world, individually, isn’t quite as large as we think it is. It’s kind of spooky too, lol.

Enough philosophy. Take a gander at our wonderful earth… and my even more wonderful fam. God knows where I’d be without them…

Ian… my youngest

Tabitha… give her older brother the treatment.

Simon… our oldest.

The coolest Father-in-law in the world.

… and the coolest Mother-in-law!

my better half… Alicia.

Ian lost a battle with some concrete steps… resulting in a “colorful” forehead.

some late night work

Salt of the Earth Apparel 2010 (Baton Rouge Photographer)

I’ve been shooting for Salt of the Earth Apparel Inc. since it’s inception. I was just starting out at the same time and we’ve been together ever since.

The company, and it’s message, is really traveling these days. Just go to any Lifeway Christian Store and you’ll see the shirts on the shelves. It’s been a year of growth for sure! I count Gwen, the CEO, as one of my best friends and I’m always thrilled when she invites me to shoot again. She has the patience of Job, lol!

Below is a sampling of some of this year’s designs. This is straight-ahead catalog work, so there isn’t any wild processing or crazy composition. Just compelling photos of cool shirts… worn by our staff of great (local!) models. We shot these over the course of two hectic days in May… first in Bell Buckle (TN) and then in Christiana (TN) at one of our favorite locations, Miller’s Grocery. The company has a vintage feel with modern sensibilities that everyone seems to enjoy. So… Enjoy! … and spread the word. Gwen’s shirts are always an inspiration

(She’s got “the eye” for sure!)

Ms. Jackson @ 1 Year (Baton Rouge Portrait Photograhy)

Ok… so I’m moving to Baton Rouge. Going back to become a “Dr.” of sorts. More on that in another post.

This session was one of the last few I’ll shoot in Murfreesboro and it was a really nice one. As hot as it was, the kids were great and we had some really compelling light to work with. I’ve also been playing with some off-camera lighting in an attempt to take my shots to another level (image-quality wise) and I hope you’ll agree that it worked… just check out the portrait shots from under the trees.

The one thing about the Jackson family, in particular, that I’ll REALLY miss is how loving the girls are. The older girls literally swarm me everytime I come to shoot at their house… and leaving is even more difficult! Love you, kids!

Enough sentimentality. On with the images!

Cheers Jacksons! Shelby
